Lord of the Rings Birthday Theme Party
Super fun LOTR books-cake!

Super fun LOTR books-cake!

Lord of the Rings Birthday Theme Party

I don’t really know much about LOTR, but when my sweet, loving, bashful grandson asked for a LOTR birthday theme party I had to pony up!

SOOO, I did what most people do when they are clueless about any particular subject, yep, I googled it! I just needed to see what it looked like, so I typed in Lord of the Rings on Google Images. Perfect! I didn’t have to watch the movies OR read the books after all!

All I needed was a good cake idea and some costume type clothes for our theme photo.

The hippie store on 4th ave. downtown Tucson covered the costume clothes! Next was the cake…I had no idea what to do, so I sifted through Google images and I came across a LOTR cake book and I was down for the challenge.

On Google, once again, on how to make a book cake…I found a great tutorial (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fmdlENnsEOs )

Ok, so fondant…ummmm, yeah, I worked with it once before, I think I actually made it myself a couple of years ago and I remember thinking, “never again…”. so this time, I thought I’d buy it FO SHO!!

Off to Walmart I went and in the wedding isle I found a box of rolled dark brown fondant and another box of natural colored assorted fondant (light brown, light pink, dark brown & black). I also picked up a cheap chain.

I made the cake (and yes, I bought the box kind-chocolate fudge, to be exact, it was quick and easy) and put it in the fridge to cool.

AAAANNNDDDD, back on Google images again to get the LOTR logo; printed it in black and white (just to save my colored ink…it’s just too expensive to waste…). I used paper, but I’d definitely print it on cardstock next time…note to self…then I printed out a wallet side J.R.R. Tolkien symbol as well.

I cut out all the letters, set them on the rolled out light brown fondant and used a wooden skewer that I had on hand to trace around the letters. Then I used a razor blade to carve them out. I rolled out the black fondant and did the same thing with the J.R.R. Tolkien symbol. This, by far, took the longest amount of time!

I took the cake out of the fridge and floured one side to make it easy to move later and frosted the top and sides. I rolled out the dark brown fondant for the book “cover” and basically followed the instructions on the tutorial I watched earlier, making a few modifications of my own along the way. I rolled out the light pink fondant and used it as the “pages”. I placed the LOTR logo title on the front and once I had the letters where I wanted them, I used a small paintbrush and water to “glue” them on….apparently that’s how fondant works…. Then I added all the little touches and my book was done!

I put a piece of 8 ½ x 11 paper on a brown paper bag and cut around it so the brown paper was the same size. I stuck it in the printer and printed out the maps. Ummm… yeah, it got stuck in the printer the first time so I had to really smooth it out and it worked great!

I decorated the surrounding area with the maps, the ring and chain and some green leaves.

Boom! Done! Fun!
